An effective way to avoid relapse is keeping yourself busy. Having too much free time can be overwhelming and your thoughts may just wander through places you should avoid. That’s why finding a healthy activity that keeps you entertained is so important in recovery. Exercise is a great example since it helps both your physical and mental health. Whether it’s yoga, playing a sports game, or going to the gym, exercising is an excellent way to keep your mind and body busy.
It really is up to you, the important thing is you find something that really interests you and that you enjoy. Volunteering, learning to play a new instrument, gardening, baking, taking a course to learn a new skill… the possibilities are endless. Remember, lying on the couch all day will most likely lead you to relapse. This is the time to try new things, and maybe you’ll end up making new friends who share the same interests as you.
Recovery isn’t always easy, but it will always be worth it. You have already taken big steps, or at least are thinking about it, and that’s already a major win. It does take a lot of willpower and discipline, but once you start really noticing how amazing sobriety is, it will get easier. Having people you can count on, practicing mindfulness and keeping yourself busy are just a few tips that can make this process a lot more simple.
